Statistical issues in the development of an automotive on-board diagnostics

2008

The automotive on-board diagnostics (OBD) is a complex system whose aim is to monitor the state-of-health of another complex system, i.e. the vehicle engine. OBD aimed at the containment of polluting exhaust emissions is nowadays compulsory on every vehicle model introduced into the market. Increasingly stringent regulations and ever more demanding customers push from opposite sides towards a perfect working of OBD systems. Therefore manufacturers are globally interested in the high robustness and reliability of such critical systems. The aim of this presentation is to give an insight into the main statistical problems arisen during an extensive research project carried out in collaboration…

Obtaining dynamic Norton parameters of a solar panel from manufacturer data

2016

Photovoltaic arrays have been shown to possess significant influence on the dynamic performance of coupled source-converter-load system while its dynamic resistance is the most important parameter, contributing to the overall system dynamics. In this paper, a method of deriving the parameters of linearized photovoltaic equivalent circuit from manufacturer data is proposed. The approach allows predicting the range of dynamic Norton parameters for the expected irradiation and temperature operation conditions thus defining clear bounds required for robust design of the system controller.

Robust dynamic comfort modelling for motorcycle riding

2015

Comfort modeling is considered a prerequisite in motorcycle design, primarily to address safety concerns and to position the product on themarket. However, a comprehensive methodology for comfort modeling during the earliest development phases of a motorcycle model is still missing. Anthropometrical variation is the main noise factor to consider in comfort modeling in relation to the unavoidable variability of body segments. However, comfort is a subjective concept influencing riders’ choice of motorcycle model. This work is a generalization of the robust ergonomic design methodology aimed at designing products whose ergonomic performance is insensitive to anthropometrical variation. This w…

On the robust design of unknown inputs Takagi-Sugeno observer

2012

This paper deals with the observer design for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models subject to unknown inputs and disturbance affecting both states and outputs of the system. Sufficient conditions to design an unknown input T-S observer are given in Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) terms. Relaxations are introduced by using intermediate variables. Numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the given result.

A Robustness Approach to Reliability

2012

Reliability of products is here regarded with respect to failure avoidance rather than probability of failure. To avoid failures, we emphasize variation and suggest some powerful tools for handling failures due to variation. Thus, instead of technical calculation of probabilities from data that usually are too weak for correct results, we emphasize the statistical thinking that puts the designers focus on the critical product functions. Making the design insensitive to unavoidable variation is called robust design and is handled by (i) identification and classification of variation, (ii) design of experiments to find robust solutions, and (iii) statistically based estimations of proper safe…

Insights on Partial Information Sharing in Supply Chain dynamics

2015

This paper provides an assessment of partial Information Sharing (IS) in Supply Chain (SC). We study the dynamics of collaborative multi-echelon structure, characterized by an increasing level of information visibility among partners. To do so, we mathematically model six four-echelon serial SCs via difference equations and conduct numerical simulations on the basis of a robust design of experiment. Results shows how (1) as the extent of IS increases, the performance of whole SC improves as well, and (2) the impact of IS depends not on which particular members are involved but on the number of collaborative members.

Demographic responses to protection from harvesting in a long-lived marine species

2021

Abstract Marine protected areas (MPAs) are usually considered to have positive effects on the recovery of over-exploited populations. However, resolving the extent to which MPAs function according to their conservation goals requires that essential demographic information such as individual survival and population size are quantified. To this end, we analyzed a 16-year replicated mark-recapture study on European lobster (Homarus gammarus, n = 8793) conducted at several protected and unprotected sites in southern Norway, quantifying the impact of MPAs on local population dynamics by means of a “before-after control-impact” study approach (BACI). Lobster survival and abundance were estimated …
